Photo Gallery 3 - La Grande Parade

You have to be in the mood to wade through this lot.
On Tuesday 19th July along with perhaps 1,000 other traditional boats and a lot of onlookers in every sort of craft we "paraded" from Brest to Douarnenez. The whole day was one big photo opportunity and I took over a hundred but here are 36 of them to try and capture the occasion:

Never mind the replica galleon, that's our mate Marion in East Breeze - now why is she turning to starboard when the way out of the harbour is to port? -We find out later she had engine issues which she finally managed to resolve.

I know, I know, it's Irene again but she's so photogenic and she sailed out of the Rade at the same time...

To start with the Parade consisted mainly of smaller boats as we had been asked to set off first

Here we are approaching the first lot of rocky islands - they like to have everyone bunched up here as much as possible for the photo opportunities but we tried to keep out of trouble

Included the cabin top in this one to prove we were there on Victoria

Grayhound sailing through the narrows

East Coast friends in Fable - Droid built her himself at St Osyth Boatyard and we would like to think the previous wooden yacht to be built there was AVOLA in 1965 though this may be an Essex myth

Tacking in towards the crowds of spectators on the cliff

Need help with the caption here - it's not Leader or Provident....sorry!

Old Gaffer member from the SW Area Mary Ritchie - sails set beautifully Don!

Getting a bit close?

Here she is again - Come on Irene. Square riggers starting to catch up now

Rather dwarfed by Irene these rowers have a long way to row - the route is 27 miles

Here comes Hermione

Hard to work out which spar belongs where in this throng

And off she goes - largest ensign in the fleet?

Upwind of us...

...and now downwind - the hull of this boat appears to be covered in some kind of hide

Another square rigger catching up

There's someone up the foremast - and those rowers are still rowing

I think this is the Tas de Pois (affectionately known by it's translation: Pile of Peas)

Lots of larger ships coming now

Big crowds on the cliff here

If this large lady changes course now...

She is quite close now... and closing on us

Very close! Howard pretending not to see her.

This one came close too

A safer distance - this one flying a Russian ensign
Needs the wide shot to fit these two in

Strange boat with antennae is a "thonier": a bisquine for fishing for tuna

Pen Duick

Cancalaise

The lovely Hardy from the East Coast, well reefed by a very cautious guest skipper Fabian Bush

At last! They get a break from rowing and have a nice breeze and clear air for sailing

Getting close to Douarnenez now - Hardy again

If you made it to the end of the Parade - well done!
